Summary

The 2022 edition of Wound Infection in Clinical Practice, authored by the International Wound Infection Institute (IWII) Committee, brings together current evidence and expert consensus on key aspects of wound infection, including risk assessment, wound infection diagnosis, biofilm, wound bed preparation, wound cleansing and debridement, topical antimicrobial therapy, aseptic technique, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, and emerging developments in wound care. Integral to this document is an updated version of the IWII Wound Infection Continuum (IWII-WIC) and Management Guide, designed to facilitate holistic assessment and management of wound infections.

The development of this document was supported by a rigorous methodology, including a systematic literature review, a Delphi process to refine definitions, critical appraisal of the evidence on the clinical efficacy of topical antimicrobials, and peer review by global interdisciplinary opinion leaders.
