Introduction

“Wound Biomarkers” module is part of the LINK for Wound Healing eLearning, an online education program addressing multiple topics of interest for the daily practice of HCPs in Wound Care. The module supports an advanced understanding of the roles and functions of various critical biomarkers within wound healing processes.

Biomarkers are objective medical signs used to measure the state of a disease or the effects of treatment. Wound biomarkers include enzymes, cytokines, and metabolites that are present in wound tissue or fluid. Wound biomarkers can be useful in practice, as they provide an identifiable and measurable way of tracking healing and identifying barriers to healing. Understanding wound biomarkers helps in assessing the wound’s condition and guiding treatment decisions.

Main learning objectives:​

  • To understand the role of wound biomarkers and their clinical significance
  • To recognize the major cellular players and biomarkers in different phases of wound healing
  • To understand the evolution of biomarkers in acute and chronic wounds
  • To clarify how stagnated wound healing can shift to normal healing progress by modulating biomarkers through the use of optimal dressings
