Introduction

The Matrix Metallo-proteinases are described as biomodulators in acute wounds compared to wound inhibitors in stagnated, chronic wounds. The related maceration process, induced by MMPs when in excess, is defined and explained to support the understanding of the clinical impact of this pathological process.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Presenting the updated definitions related to Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their roles in acute and chronic wound healing.
  • Understand the synthesis of MMPs and the regulation of their activity, their functions and mechanism of action in wound healing process.
  • Recognize the differences between Hyperhydration and Maceration processes.
  • Understand the clinical impact of maceration on wound surrounding skin.
