Introduction

Surgical site infection (SSI) in vascular surgery is a complication that may lead not only to wound healing problem but also a limb loss and risk of death, especially when prosthetic grafts are involved.

Patients with infection of an exposed synthetic graft have often been treated by removal or excision of the graft, with or without revascularisation with an extra-anatomic bypass or in situ reconstruction using the great saphenus vein. Exposed and infected grafts are sometimes treated with muscle flap coverage and long term intravenious antibiotics in an attempt to preserve the vascular reconstruction, but very high re-infection rate has been reported.
